Michael Ballack, UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador

Internationally acclaimed footballer Michael Ballack is Captain of the German National Team and currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen in the German league.

Through his achievements in the world of international sport, Mr Ballack is a role model for many young people around the world. Through his engagement with UNAIDS he has helped disseminate messages on HIV prevention.

Goodwill Ambassador since 2006, German football star Michael Ballack has since dedicated time and effort disseminating HIV prevention messages through the media.

He featured in a social marketing advertisement in the German magazine “Der Spiegel” and in the 60th Anniversary Issue of Times. In a recent UNAIDS Public Service Announcement Michael Ballack reaches out directly to young people and the sporting world by highlighting the importance of making smart choices and practicing safer sex to prevent getting infected by HIV.

On 12 July 2008 Ballack participated in Goal4Africa, an all-star benefit football match held at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany in honor of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday. Speaking at a press conference before the match, the superstar highlighted how educating young people about HIV prevention is crucial in the AIDS response.

In 2008 Michael Ballack teamed up with fellow footballer and UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador Emmanuel Adebayor in an HIV awareness campaign to "Unite the world against AIDS." The two footballers took time off from their busy schedules to film a Public Service Announcement at the famous London stadium Stamford Bridge. Their message has been transmitted across the world through numerous media outlets, conferences, television stations and print media including the 5th edition of the Francophone Games in Lebanon in September 2009.
