Ernest Massiah, Director, Regional Support Team for the Caribbean, UNAIDS

As Director of the Regional Support Team for the Caribbean, Ernest Massiah provides support to countries in the region to accelerate progress in achieving the targets of the 2011 United Nations General Assembly Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS.

In a region which has been particularly affected by the AIDS epidemic Mr Massiah works with countries to ensure that everyone in need has access to essential HIV services.

Prior to joining UNAIDS, Mr Massiah was Head of the Health Section at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

Mr Massiah worked for more than ten years with the Inter-American Development Bank as the lead advisor on HIV and disability. In 2006, he served as Special Advisor to the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) to help coordinate its regional AIDS programmes.

He also served as health specialist at the World Bank, designing and supervising population projects in West Africa. He was involved in developing some of the World Bank’s first regional strategies on HIV.

Mr Massiah started his career at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat in the field of regional health policy. He worked with the first Global Programme on AIDS in the Caribbean during the late 1980s.
