UNAIDS welcomes nomination of the new United States Global AIDS Coordinator

GENEVA, 27 April 2009 – The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes United States President Barack Obama’s announcement naming Dr Eric Goosby as the next US Global AIDS Coordinator.

Dr Goosby has more than 25 years of experience on AIDS issues. His experience ranges from his early years treating patients when AIDS first emerged, to engagement at the highest level of policy leadership.

"Dr Goosby is a strong and effective leader in the AIDS response in the United States and internationally," said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. "He has been on the frontlines of the epidemic and knows what works at country level. I look forward to working closely with him and the Obama Administration in achieving our shared goals of accelerating access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support."

With more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide, global support for AIDS has never been more important.
