UNAIDS congratulates Dr Eric Goosby on his confirmation as next US Global AIDS Coordinator


GENEVA , 20 June 2009 – The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) welcomes the confirmation by the United States Senate of Dr Eric Goosby as the next US Global AIDS Coordinator. Dr Goosby has more than 25 years of experience on AIDS issues. His experience ranges from his early years treating patients when AIDS first emerged, to engagement at the highest level of policy leadership.

"Under Dr Goosby’s leadership, we look forward to a strengthened partnership with the United States in the global AIDS response." said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “Dr Goosby has been on the frontlines of the epidemic and knows what works at country level. I look forward to working closely with him and the Obama Administration in achieving our shared goals of accelerating access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support."

With more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide, global support for AIDS has never been more important.
