A well‐planned response to the HIV epidemic requires accurate information about the disease over time. Mathematical models are often the most scientifically appropriate way to describe the HIV epidemic and the impact of the response because it is impossible to count the exact number of people living with HIV, people who are newly infected with HIV or people who have died from AIDS‐related causes in any country over time.
