La organización lidera la respuesta a la epidemia del VIH del sector de la salud a escala mundial. Como copatrocinador de ONUSIDA, la OMS toma la iniciativa en el tratamiento y la atención del VIH y la coinfección VIH y la tuberculosis, y coordina conjuntamente los trabajos para la eliminación de la transmisión materno infantil del VIH con el Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF).
