Despite the many challenges, UNAIDS new report shows there is a path that ends AIDS.
On Thursday 13 July 2023, UNAIDS launched The Path That Ends AIDS, at the historic Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
UNAIDS announced that there is a path that ends AIDS and demonstrated that some countries are already following it and succeeding.
HIV responses succeed when they are anchored in strong political leadership to: follow the evidence; tackle the inequalities holding back progress; enable communities and civil society organisations in their vital role in the response; and ensure sufficient and sustainable funding. The Path That Ends AIDS highlights contrasting responses. Where political commitments have taken an inclusive, human rights-based approach to support people living with and affected by HIV, there is remarkable progress in reducing new HIV infections and AIDS related deaths. Yet when leaders ignore, isolate and criminalize people living with or at risk of HIV, progress in the AIDS response is obstructed.
There was a press conference for media, and a roundtable event for the Geneva diplomatic, health, and development community, followed by a reception.

At this press conference journalists will hear from a civil society leader living with HIV about the epidemic in Asia. From the head of the Kenya’s National AIDS programme about the realities of tackling the serious and diverse epidemic there. From the former President of the Swiss Confederation about the importance of political leadership and of progressive measures in support of marginalized people at risk of HIV. From the former Health Minister of Botswana who now chairs the Global Prevention Coalition about how Botswana showed the way and what is needed now globally. And From the Executive Director of UNAIDS who is leading the quest to end AIDS by 2030.
