Ending the AIDS epidemic is impossible without dramatically stronger, more sustained action to address the HIV-related needs of people who inject drugs. Accounting for 0.2–0.5% of the global population, people who inject drugs represent an estimated 5 to 10% of all people living with HIV, with transmission among people who inject drugs driving national epidemics in many parts or the world.
