The importance of prioritizing AIDS in the post-2015 development agenda was discussed during a key note debate at the Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the African, Caribbean and Pacific States and the European Union in Strasbourg, France on 18 March. The debate was introduced by UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé.

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met together with his team of United Nations Special Envoys on HIV/AIDS to discuss their strategic directions for the year ahead. UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé also participated in the meeting that took place on 10th March 2014 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In efforts to address the complex linkages between violence and HIV, the Executive Director of UNAIDS Michel Sidibé has called on governments and communities to take concerted action on ending violence against women. Mr Sidibé made the call at a high-level panel on HIV, Gender Equality, and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights organized by UNAIDS during the 58th Commission on the Status of Women held in New York.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé launched the Zero Discrimination Day on 27 February with a major event in Beijing, China supported by the China Red Ribbon Foundation, Hanergy Holding Group, Chinese government, civil society and celebrities.

Joint mission to the Central African Republic, 18-20 February 2014. UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé met with representatives of civil society, including a network of 21 women’s groups, who spoke of the spiral of violence and the way it has affected all communities, causing long-lasting wounds.  

LONDON/GENEVA, 13 February 2014—The UNAIDS and Lancet Commission: Defeating AIDS – Advancing global health is meeting in London on the future of AIDS and global health in the post-2015 era—the recommendations will be published in The Lancet later this year.

UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé visited the Isange One Stop Centre located in Kacyiru Police Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda to see services provided for survivors of gender-based violence and child abuse. While at the hospital, Mr Sidibé learnt about the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission Family Package Programme which was initiated by the First Lady of Rwanda and supported by Imbuto Foundation in collaboration with UN agencies.
